For many of us who are not taxonomists, the genus Michelia is a bit confusing. It has historically  belonged to the Magnolia family, but recent molecular data would suggest that it is a subgenus, and so now it tends to be a synonym for Magnolia.  Michelias tend to have their flowers appear in clusters rather than singly.

This recent introduction is more or less evergreen with fragrant cream flowers clustered along the branches. It’s a beautiful and effective compact shrub .
